Surface Design Study: Research and Design

Image
Final first draft  For my surface design study I was inspired by my family's traditional Tajik embroidery and wood carving! I blended the square shapes with the curve of the flower motifs used in the wall décor embroidery. Initial Sketch Idea I started with the center piece of the traditional bar design and then rotated and copied it. Then I got onto the edges which I arrayed squares on to create the flower shape that encompasses the centerpiece. I then trimmed the parts I didn't want and placed it over the geometric design, overlapping the edges. The next part was the outside where I arrayed some circles to create the flower petals. The last thing I added was small ovals which I also arrayed after putting in an extra circle as a guide. I added colours I found are the most commonly used for Tajik embroidery and textile and then changed the background to black as that is the main base fabric used when making wall textiles. It was and still is a challenge to use 2D surfacing in R...

OBDF 210: Castle Monument

Image
"A physical reminder of a grandeur left behind to stand looming over all the lost souls that kneel before it." For our first project we were tasked with creating a 3D castle like structure using Rhino 3D. I chose to blend ideas from history and the future to create a fantasy like monument tower like castle. I used these 3 references and some story ideas I had for a novel. I mashed together old Greek structures, the shape of a framed hourglass and futuristic twisted buildings I thought looked cool!   I decided to focus on using cylinders and polygons to build my tower monument and try out stacking to see how it would look. The main idea is that this future like ancient monument is found standing alone in the middle of a scorching desert, tall and intimidating, waiting for someone to see it once again.
