Surface Design Study: Research and Design
For my surface design study I was inspired by my family's traditional Tajik embroidery and wood carving! I blended the square shapes with the curve of the flower motifs used in the wall décor embroidery.

I then trimmed the parts I didn't want and placed it over the geometric design, overlapping the edges.
The last thing I added was small ovals which I also arrayed after putting in an extra circle as a guide.
I added colours I found are the most commonly used for Tajik embroidery and textile and then changed the background to black as that is the main base fabric used when making wall textiles.
It was and still is a challenge to use 2D surfacing in Rhino as I got so used to doing 3D from last year that it's been a bit frustrating. I feel as though I am unable to do the crazy things I want to, but this has been a great assignment in helping me get more confident in the skillset. I hope to refine this design and create something even more beautiful that my family can hang up somewhere, much like the textiles they already have!
As a work in progress I am happy with where it is! I am however ready to jump in and create some more beautiful designs that are even better and more intricate to really connect with the beauty of Tajik art. The main thing i need to focus on now is changing the way I did the colours as I did not turn boundries to yes as now the layers are overlapping which won't work in the laser printing process.
For the final I went back and did a proper run through of the colours using Hatch and made sure to use colours more in line with the embroidery I always see at home!
I love how it's not perfectly symmetrical.
