Mesh Mashup: Concept generation

Remix Culture

For this project we were assigned to create 10 concept pieces that uses the ides of "Remix Culture". This is an art style that encourages artists and creators to edit, splice, and combine preexisting ideas, icons, and materials to form something new. In Remix culture, no object is in one permanent state, instead, artists are able to reframe the narrative of whatever medium they are working with (song, artwork, design, object, etc.) into something completely new. This is done through the means of deconstruction, transformation, contrasting, and re-using other media. Remix culture is heavily used within storytelling, Rap music, graffiti, and more.

1. "Foot Stool"

This first concept came about as a visual pun to me. I had first thought to turn a book into a chair, but then I found the feet and thought of foot stools! I find that books and magazines find their way onto foot stools and smaller chairs and so the book makes up the seat and the feet are the "legs" that hold it up!

2. "Shoe car"

This concept I feel is pretty self explanatory, it is simply what I think a shoe would like as a car of some kind! I first thought of the shoe as an object I wanted to use and thought "hey, this could make a funny gag car!" and thus this creation was made!

My first idea with the house was to turn the house into a "vase" with the tree growing out of it. While I was building it I got a sudden epiphany and remembered that tree houses exist! I then decided to take the name literally and made a house that is also a tree and thus it is a "tree house".

4. "Mini Shark Attack"

The inspiration for this piece was the absurdity of the movie Sharknado and the mini creatures from the movie Spykids 2! I put together a little scene where a mini shark hid in the mug only to jump out and attack whatever unfortunate thing disturbed it.

5. "Love and War"

For this concept I found an old fashioned cannon in the toy section of Thingiverse and it reminded me of war and so I decided to contrast it with something delicate. This led me to think of the juxtaposition of war and love. An icon associated with love is a red rose so I found one and put it in the mouth of the cannon to make it look like it is shooting out from it.

This concept is a physical representation of the idea of reincarnation. The skull represents the past life that just ended and the flesh face is the new life that the soul is moving into. The black liquid coming from the skulls eye represents the bad karma that is moving from the previous life into the new life and the white liquid represents the good karma from the previous life. It turns into a bright yellow to symbolize the spark of a new life!

7. "Laser Lamp"

This concept is my rendition of the many killer inanimate everyday things like "Monster House" or the many killer car films and stories out there. I chose to create a street lamp that is actually a laser that sets things on fire!

For this concept I took a kitchen pot and thought about what I could make with it. I decided that since it can hold a lot of water it can become some sort of pool or lake, I went for the lake look and added in some boats and then some people waiting by the edge for the boat to go around and come back to pick them up for the "round the lake" tour!

9. "Another way of getting to orbit"

This conceptualization comes from a funny thought I had of an astronaut that doesn't have a spaceship so they have to use some balloons to float up to orbit! This was inspired by the house from the movie "Up".

10. "Call of the Wild"

This final conceptualization is my literal take on the phrase "call of the wild". The phone, which represents "calling", has plants and a rock growing over it to make it look like the "wild" and nature are taking over. I think if I were to continue to render this piece I would find more plants to place around and give it diversity.
