Papercraft Objects: Printed templates

This week was a ramp up in the papercraft assignment with the creation of the prototype printed templates of our final object idea! I took inspiration from the papercraft research I did and decided to create a lightbox scene. My significant object is my notebook/journal! I have kept one since I was in middle school and it keeps all of my secrets, grief, and happy moments safe within its pages. the concept is that it will open like a book as a 3d object and then it will reveal the 2 scenes within it as it lights up! These are the flattened and net versions of both sides of the diary for print. I miss calculated on the spine however as I needed to add 1 more rectangle for it to fit both boxes together properly. And finally all of the digital CAD work printed out onto cardstock ready for class! I am greatly anticipating the pain that I will experience in attempting to actually cut and put this object together! Wish me luck!

Mesh Mashup: Refinement ("Soul transfer")

  "Soul transfer" "Soul transfer" is a piece that is a representation of the ideas of life, death, and reincarnation. The skull represents death and past life, On the other hand, the head represents life itself and in turn, new life. What blends these 2 things together is the liquid pouring from the eyes of the skull into the head; a movement from the past life to the new, the 'soul' if you will. The black and the white contrast between the liquid pouring is the bad and the good that was done in the past life moving on into the new life. It is a look at the concept of karma but also the balance of yin and yang. The gold liquid in the head represents the purity that occurs when you blend good and bad as all people are born pure, but not perfect. Surface Design Study: Research and Design

Final first draft  For my surface design study I was inspired by my family's traditional Tajik embroidery and wood carving! I blended the square shapes with the curve of the flower motifs used in the wall décor embroidery. Initial Sketch Idea I started with the center piece of the traditional bar design and then rotated and copied it. Then I got onto the edges which I arrayed squares on to create the flower shape that encompasses the centerpiece. I then trimmed the parts I didn't want and placed it over the geometric design, overlapping the edges. The next part was the outside where I arrayed some circles to create the flower petals. The last thing I added was small ovals which I also arrayed after putting in an extra circle as a guide. I added colours I found are the most commonly used for Tajik embroidery and textile and then changed the background to black as that is the main base fabric used when making wall textiles.
