Papercraft Objects: First Prototype

For this week we built the prototypes out of our printed templates. This was a very enlightening process for myself as I learned a lot about my piece and how I can improve it for the final!

I first decided to create the side of my light box object that said "Dear diary," to see how difficult it might be to glue the pieces in place at the proper height within the base.

Once completed I found that there was a large amount of excess space within this side of the object so I plan of shortening the sides of the box base for this side in particular for the final.

The next challenge was to create the other half of my journal papercraft.

I found that the tabs were too long for all of the layers to fit so I trimmed them a little over half:

Unfortunately, the 5th layer of the scene I was attempting to create still could not fit. As I will adjust the other half to be smaller with its box base this half will be made larger to accommodate all of the layers!

The final step was to put both halves together to make them open like a book! As previously stated in my printed templates update, I accidentally miss measured the spine template and thus I drew in the extra rectangle to make it the proper size for my prototype.

Once the other half was glued into place I had a completed papercraft prototype!

I have a feeling that the final will be very different from this prototype. I plan to create asymmetrical halves instead of the equal ones I used for this prototype. The final will also contain led lights to create the proper light box scene like the ones from my research. I plan on also switching the "Dear diary," side to the left as it will become the smaller one in my next edit. Overall I am quite happy to have learned so much in doing this prototyping and can not wait to see the final put together!
