Chess Pieces: Concepts

When I first got started on this project I had decided to make a whimsical themed set. I first thought about how a chess board is a king's court. And then it was to figure out the most pretentious thing about royalty I could think of. This led to my thought on excessive and useless tableware! 5 forks, 12 spoons, 15 knives, you name it, so I came up with initial selections based on the actual uses of each piece on a chess board.

The king would be a :"fish fork" which is just a fork with 2 pikes instead of 3 or 4. Useless, just like the king in the game.

The queen would be a steak knife as she cuts through the board like crazy.

The knight does some strange movements in the game making it a weird utensil, I chose the spork.

The bishop is a bit useless and it used more as a last resort, thus a desert spoon works well as it is used at the end of a meal only.

The rook is more useful, making it a great fit as a dinner spoon.

The pawns always go first, thus I felt the mini forks used as for appetizers would fit them the best.

The main problem I had with this idea was the complicated shapes and 3D printing them, thus I went with  a more geometric concept.

My next and chosen concept was to take the chess pieces and break them down into their basic shapes. I was inspired by the minimalist style in products like "minimalist uno cards" as well as in interior design.

I mainly used rectangular pyramids, cubes, and spheres to create these minimalist geometric chess pieces.
